During 2001/2002 five small plots in four different villages were contracted to test several varieties and crops for suitability in Yangqu County. Crop diversification is needed to increase farmers' incomes. The aim of the pilot project was to establish good working relationships with the farmers and better understand the local growing conditions and agricultural system.

VegetablesThe crops tested were:

  • Sweet potato
  • Endives
  • Broccoli
  • Alfalfa
  • Gherkin
  • Cucumbers
  • Cauliflower
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Sweet corn
  • Rhubarb

Different varieties were grown and some marketing trials were conducted.

The vegetables were sold to local supermarkets and were warmly received. Broccoli, previously not grown in this region, was a major hit. New tomato varieties brought many benefits to the farmers: better resistances against diseases, resulting in less need for spraying pesticides and increased fruit quality.

Due to lack of personnel this projects has been stopped. We are looking for a vegetable expert to join the program and re-establish this otherwise highly successful program. If you are interested please contact us.
