YurtThe problems in the agricultural sector are immense... Under Stalin the Kazakhs were forced to give up their nomadic lifestyle and become farmers instead, which meant they had to trade their yurts (tents) for apartment buildings. AppartmentsFor this purpose many Koreans were deported to Kazakhstan to teach the Kazakhs the principles of farming. Up to this day the Koreans are the best farmers. In the early 1960's the large irrigation schemes in the Syrdarja River were constructed by the Soviets. Especially a lot of rice needed to be produced in order to boost the Soviet economy; the efficiency of the water use was shockingly low and in recent years this has only become worse... For years now hardly any water has entered the Aral Sea through the Syrdarja and the Amudarja, Irrigationwhich is located more to the south. This has caused what may be called the greatest ecological disaster in the world. The fact remains that the area is now inhabited and that solutions will have to be found if the standard of living in the area is to be maintained. An additional factor on the road towards better agricultural production is the whole issue of land ownership.
