Country Information on Morocco Print

BerberMorocco, a country with a population of approximately 30 million people on the north-west tip of Africa, is currently facing a crisis in the rural sector of its population. Each year an estimated 370,000 people leave rural areas for the cities, fuelled by successive droughts that have devastated agriculture, general economic hardship in rural areas and the lure of a better life elsewhere. Some of these succeed in setting up a new life in Western-Europe, but others settle in the ever swelling cities. This has resulted in an increase of the populations of the larger cities which are not well-equipped to handle such rapid growth. This exodus of people from rural areas to the cities and the importance of agriculture to the economy of Morocco have created an interest in the need for development of rural areas.
